'Lapstrake Planking', Second Thursdays at The Apprenticeshop
The craft of wooden boat planking is the topic for the May meeting of Second Thursdays at The Apprenticeshop , the school’s monthly public program series. Apprencticeshop staff will give a hands-on demonstration of the techniques used in lapstrake planking. Also known as clinker style, lapstrake planks overlap each other, a design which strengthens the structure of the boat while allowing for a thinner board and therefore lighter hull. While most boatbuilding weekend warriors use kits that come fully equipped with pre-cut boards that require no measuring, this evening program will focus on creating the boards from scratch. Apprenticeshop staff will de-mystify the process of spiling (that is, measuring and cutting a pattern for the plank), and demonstrate fastening planks to the frames using hand-peened rivets. They will also discuss the various woods chosen and the history of this method, which, for centuries, has been the basis for countless wooden boat designs. The program will be held in boatbuilding shop, located at 643 Main St. A tour of the apprentices’ (those enrolled in the 2-year boatbuilding course) projects will follow. Current projects include an 18’ Buzzard’s Bay sloop, the Apprentice 15 (a double ended, lapstrake sloop designed in house), a 14’ Skylark, 2 Susan skiffs, 2 Paul Gartside clinker prams and a 10’ Abeking and Rasmussen tender. $5 admission at the door. 7pm. Call (207)594-1800 or visit www.apprenticeshop.org for more information.
