“This is the Maine I love, that I identify with. Salty, colorful, scrappy, soulful, intrepid, resourceful. The bliss of rowing around my harbor at dusk or dawn. A calm harbor like a meditation. The familiar caustic welcoming smells of the boat shed. I visit the Beetle Cats on a cold ruthlessly-beautiful sometimes-snowy Maine spring day—little boats tucked away like bears in hibernation, snoozing their way back to summer. The leaning in, the discomfort of learning a new trick, a new skill. Sailing these vivid, temperamental boats, keepers of history. The icy cold welcoming sea—a tonic for a pandemic spring. I swim toward and around the orange and blue boats, then back. A Maine Summer awaits. This Maine I love.”
